Book buddies – 5th graders and kindergarten

Our Book Buddies program continues to be a highlight of the week as 5th graders partner with kindergarteners for shared reading time! Each session brings older and younger students together in cozy reading spaces throughout the school, where 5th graders read aloud to their kindergarten buddies, discuss stories, and share their love of books. The genuine connections forming between grade levels are heartwarming to witness—5th graders take pride in selecting engaging books and using expressive reading voices, while kindergarteners listen attentively and ask thoughtful questions about the stories. This cross-grade collaboration has become a cherished tradition that both groups eagerly anticipate.
The Book Buddies program creates meaningful developmental opportunities for students at both grade levels. For our 5th graders, serving as reading mentors builds leadership skills, confidence, and a sense of responsibility as they model fluent reading and engage younger students in literary discussions. They practice patience, adaptability, and communication skills while reinforcing their own reading comprehension.
